Packing Lunches

Ever since I was a kid in Michigan it was very important that my parents or I packed an eco-friendly lunch. At nature camp we received raffle tickets only if our lunches were packed w/ reusable containers and/or waxed paper.

People are concerned about health issues, in addition to our impact on our environment. The concern, raised by recent studies, that certain plastic containers leach toxins into our food and water promote cancer growth.

Here are some ideas to pack your lunch in a green way:

-Reusable Containers i.e. Lock and Lock, Wrap-n-mat
Lock and Lock has new lunch set for a sandwich and two 6oz. sides! Wrap-n-mat was just picked up at Kitchen Kaboodle (9/12/08).

-Glass containers i.e. Pyrex, Anchor Hocking, Bormioli Rocco Frigoverre
Pyrex can be found pretty much anywhere (Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, etc.). Anchor is nice because it comes in marked 1 cup/2 cup sizes - giving you a better idea of portion sizes. Unfortunately, it's hard to find but it can be bought at Walmart. Bormioli Rocco Frigoverre is even harder to find. I found it at our local garden/home store, Down to Earth. Oh, and I recently noticed that Pottery Barn carries it too (9/12/08).

-Wax Paper i.e. Natural Value
Wax paper is fully biodegradable and you can compost it!

-Sigg Water bottle
-Keep Silverware at your Office

So, if you do get take out then you're not using plastic utensils that break in your food.

-Reusable Lunch Sack
Sack Lunches can be chic and not just for kiddies. Check out Built NY or Do-Your-Part from Pottery Barn.
