His Dark Materials

His Dark Materials is a trilogy comprised of three books by Philip Pullman: Northern Lights (Golden Compass), The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass - first published in 1995.
I was excited and then saddened when I learned the first of the trilogy is set to release in theaters in December. I had the same feeling when Roald Dahl's James, Charlie, and Matilda were eclipsed by their movie counterparts.
It is always exciting when your favorite books are turned into a movie version, like Lord of the Rings. But then again, it's always heartbreaking when you have imagined characters and their subtle nuances, which you know by heart, are suddenly turned into this one Hobbit and one Lyra whom everyone knows.
It is one thing when Ian Fleming's James Bond springs to life on screen, or will it be Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt next? But when it's our childhood imagination that is suddenly ripped from the pages it just seems different.
Maybe it’s because the likes of Frodo and Lyra are no longer distinctly ours, tucked safely in our imagination.
