Wedding Poem

I've been meaning to post Jessica's introduction and poem that she read at our wedding. I've had a lot of requests because it was unintelligible through her tears. So here it is:
I wrote this poem for Janiece and Dan, whom I love very much.
It is, of course, inspired by them, but also by Gilgamesh, the first epic poem in written history in which the Sumerian prince Gilgamesh goes on a journey with his dearest friend Enkidu. At the end of the pilgrimage Enkidu dies and Gilgamesh weeps saying, “My companion is no longer flesh but clay.”
But this is a day of beginning and promise, so this poem transforms Gilgamesh’s weeping into a call for celebration with the opening line,
“My companion is no longer clay but flesh.”
It doesn’t have a title, but I’d like to read a quote by the poet Mark Doty.
